Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Cultural workshops have long been a significant medium for the preservation and promotion of traditional skills, serving as platforms to educate communities, pass down heritage, and sustain indigenous knowledge. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, cultural workshops are pivotal in maintaining traditional crafts such as weaving, pottery, leatherwork, and metalwork, which are deeply rooted in the community’s history. These workshops provide opportunities for skill transfer across generations, ensuring that traditional knowledge does not become obsolete in the face of globalization and modernity.
Studies by Adebayo and Hassan (2023) emphasize the critical role of cultural workshops in preserving cultural identity while fostering economic empowerment. By creating a space for artisans to display their skills and teach others, these workshops bridge the gap between historical traditions and contemporary applications. Additionally, they contribute to social cohesion by uniting participants with shared cultural values and aspirations.
In Zaria, the challenges of cultural erosion due to urbanization and modern influences have highlighted the need for robust interventions. Cultural workshops have emerged as an effective tool to counter these trends, promoting not only the revival of traditional skills but also their adaptation to modern markets. This study explores how cultural workshops contribute to the preservation and promotion of traditional skills, focusing on their design, implementation, and impact in Zaria Local Government Area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural richness of Zaria, many traditional skills are at risk of extinction due to a lack of platforms for their practice and transmission. Younger generations often show little interest in these skills, perceiving them as outdated or unprofitable. This apathy is compounded by inadequate investment in cultural workshops and limited awareness of their significance.
Moreover, the absence of formal documentation and structured teaching methods for traditional skills further exacerbates the problem. Cultural workshops, while available, often face logistical and financial constraints that hinder their effectiveness. This study seeks to identify and analyze these challenges, aiming to provide actionable solutions for enhancing the role of cultural workshops in promoting traditional skills in Zaria Local Government Area.
